The Center successfully developed reconfigurable multimodal neural computing Thinker chip

Recently, the reconfigurable multimodal neural computing chip “Thinker” (code: Thinker) designed by the microelectronics sub-center’s research group headed by Prof. Wei Shaojun and Vice Prof. Yin Shouyi has successfully passed the tape-out and testsa breakthrough in the Center’s artificial intelligence chip research and development. Artificial intelligence (AI) represents a disruptive technological revolution in the global information industry, and is transforming human production and lifestyles. The neural computing chip, as a core component of AI system, is of great significance to promoting the future development of AI.

The Thinker chip designed by the Center adopts reconfigurable architecture and circuit technology, and, by simulating the computing model of human brain neural network, realizes an array of artificial intelligence functions. Removing the bottlenecks in neural network computing and memory access, this chip efficiently carries out multi-modal hybrid neural network computation. Its biggest advantage lies in the ultra-high energy efficiency, 1000 times higher than the GPU widely used in the current deep learning. Thinker chip also supports circuit-level programming and reconstruction. This versatile neural network computing platform can be widely used in areas such as robots, unmanned aerial vehicles, smart cars, smart home, and consumer electronics, contributing to the promotion of AI technology and making the smart industry stronger and better in Beijing and China as a whole.
